Fun Christmas Activities to do With Children This Festive Season

If you’ve got little ones at home this festive season and find yourself thinking about how you can keep them busy, there are lots of options out there. Simple ideas such as Christmas crafts, easy and cute treats to bake together and plenty of fun holiday games to play!
Christmas is getting nearer and we are sure that you, like many parents, like to ensure that you are spending quiet, relaxing and fun time with your kids, creating memories and enjoying quality time is on the agenda instead of the mad rush of the holiday season.
There are so many fun Christmas activities for kids that you can sit down and enjoy doing with them this year. Maybe you like to get into the kitchen and cook up a storm with them? Perhaps you like to get cosy and watch a good Christmas film or curl up with a Christmas book? Maybe Christmas crafts are more your thing? Either way, there is something for everyone to enjoy at this time of year!
With this in mind, we are going to now run through some of our favourite ideas for keeping your little ones occupied this festive season - suited to everyone, regardless of your budget and also in keeping with COVID-19 restrictions.
Pandemic-Friendly Christmas Family Activities
2020 has been a year that has thrown families across the country so many challenges in terms of family life, forcing parents and children to adapt to these massive changes of routine which have taken place. This is another reason why it’s important to make sure we spread extra holiday cheer and offer a sense of normalcy for your kids. There are so many pandemic-friendly Christmas activities you can participate in while remaining safe but most importantly - having fun!
Decorate and send Christmas cards
This is a classic Christmas activity and one that will certainly be appreciated, especially to older friends and family who may need some extra festive cheer. Grab some colourful paper, some glitter and a few Christmas crafty bits and get stuck in! The messier the better!
Use an online Santa Tracker
This is a fantastic online portal that has been running for several years but is an excellent, interactive and fun way for your littles ones to see what Father Christmas and his elves are up to and whereabouts he is on his rounds! You can access this all December long via Google!
Christmas Zoom fun
If you are unable to meet up with extended family or close friends over the festive season due to COVID-19 restrictions, you can still catch up with friends and family over Zoom or video calls and organise a fun activity such as a Christmas themed quiz. This is also a good time to share Christmas stories and get your kids excited and feel some sense of normality.
Christmas lights tour
Pile the kids in the car, stick some Christmas songs on the radio, and drive around to homes or neighbourhoods known for their over-the-top Christmas light displays. While spending quality time in the car with your family, you can tell them Christmas stories or sing Christmas songs along with the music. This is a great way to get festive. Make sure you keep wrapped up warm if you decide to go for a walk instead!
Wreath making
We all love a festive wreath, and this is a perfect DIY Christmas decoration activity. Get the kids in from outside for a quick winter walk to gather evergreen branches and pine cones, trim some from the bottom of your Christmas tree or just buy some at the store. Attach your greens to a foam or wire ring (a bent metal coat hanger works well) and allow your kids to decorate it with Christmas ornaments and bows. Or make a pre-schooler-friendly paper wreath!
Christmas movie marathon
Spending an afternoon sat gathered around watching Christmas movies is an absolute must! You could also spread out your movie marathon over the course of December. Let each family member pick a favourite holiday flick to watch with the family. Cuddle up under blankets with a warm cup of hot chocolate and some popcorn to make it feel extra cosy.
Make Christmas ornaments
Decorating a Christmas tree is probably already on your to-do list - but why not get the kids involved for a festive holiday activity! Make this holiday tradition even more special by adding a new handmade Christmas ornament each year made by one of your littles ones. We love a DIY christmas activity, and this one can easily become a family tradition that documents your child’s growth and creativity each year.
Do Christmas karaoke
Infuse your home with the festive sounds of the season. From classic carols such as “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bells” to modern hits like "All I Want for Christmas Is You," there are loads of great Christmas songs to add to your playlist - and for you to sing along to.
Snuggle up with a Christmas book
For a relaxed way to enjoy the season, dig into a lovely Christmas book. You can even take turns reading a story out loud. Go for a classic like The Nutcracker, or try a modern bestseller like Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand.
Plan a Christmas crafternoon
Looking to recreate some of the fun crafts the kids usually bring home from school? Stage your own afternoon full of arts and crafts. There are loads of DIY decorations that even toddlers and pre-schoolers can help make, like painting wooden shapes to make ornaments.
All of these activities mentioned work out as pretty inexpensive. They just take a little creativity and get-up-and-go to get your family in the christmas spirit! After an especially difficult year, now is the time to be especially jolly and spread cheer in whatever way we can.
