There’s nothing more exciting than when your child says their first word and starts to develop their communication skills. At this stage, you can begin to steer away from baby babble and start to have real conversations with your child as their personality shines through. Babies learn to talk usually within their first two years, and although they might not be saying words they can understand a lot more than they can say themselves.

So, how can you help your child develop their speech and communication skills? Read on to find out more.

Conversation

Talking to your child is very important not just in terms of their communication skills but it will also build a better relationship and help with socialisation too. Remember, your child is very observant and everything you say and do is picked up by them - the good and the bad! Speak to them using words they can understand and respond too as this will develop their vocabulary and stay interested.

Reading and games

When playing, make a conscious effort to prompt conversation with your child. Reading is a great activity for developing communication skills as you can describe the pictures and story as well as sound out words. Other games such as flashcards and eye spy are also beneficial for speech and communication.

Socialising

Children learn from others so encouraging social situations will have them work on their communication such as at nursery or daycare. Communication covers a range of things such as negotiation, conversation and discussion all of which they’ll experience in these settings.

Arranging playdates is also another way of interacting with peers and learning new words.
