The last few months have been challenging for lots of families, but perhaps significantly so for parents with young children. During lockdown, it has certainly been easy to run out of inspiration for enjoyable things to do with the family and in particular, to entertain younger kids. If you’re racking your brains for things to do or ways to keep your little ones entertained during COVID-19, we’ve collated some simple ideas to help you keep the boredom at bay over the summer holidays.

Make an activity sheet

First things first, to keep your kids involved in the process to keep them looking forward to what they’re going to be doing each day. You can get them to help you make a chart that you can stick on the fridge or cupboard, or even get them to fold up pieces of paper into a jar and each day pull out different activities for them to do. If there are certain things you had planned over the summer holidays, such as a trip abroad or an outing to a theme park, jot these down too and think about ways you can recreate these either at home or using resources online like virtual tours so they don’t miss out.

Take a camping trip in your back garden

Lockdown might’ve halted some of your plans of going abroad, nevertheless, you can still take your little ones on a family adventure - to the back garden! Pop up a tent, roll out some air beds and get the sleeping bags down from the attic. Make the experience feel real by leaving your laptops and techy bits in the house, and instead play, roast some marshmallows on the barbecue, stargaze, and interact with nature watch for good quality family bonding. You could also tell scary stories when the sun goes down if you’re feeling brave and use torches for, especially spooky impact. If you haven't got a garden, you could do something similar by creating a den inside with blankets and duvets and camp out on the floor for a night.

Glastongarden

Another fun thing you can do is a DIY festival. Yes, Glastonbury 2020 was cancelled, however, there’s nothing stopping you from having your own little festival. Get the music, barbecue, and camping chairs – and not forgetting the flower headbands and face paints. You could even encourage your kids to put on a musical performance for some extra entertainment.

A family water fight in the garden using a hose pipe or water pistols

This one is a classic that the kids will adore. Being at home doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up indoors, particularly if you’ve got a garden. If the weather stays sunny, then what better way to relax and cool down than with a family water fight? It’s harmless good fun that gets the blood pumping and smiles beaming. Also, you’ll all get a beneficial dose of vitamin D, which plays an essential role in keeping your kid’s teeth, bones and muscles healthy.

Family talent show

If the weather is not great you can always bring outdoor entertainment into the house. By this we mean, Saturday night entertainment on the TV usually centres around talent shows and singing shows. Well, with this in mind, you could ditch the TV for a night and bring the talent to your living room? Everyone can get involved – if it’s singing, performing magic, a fashion show, or playing an instrument. Get some prizes and create your own judging panel to make it more real - and super fun for all!

Explore some wildlife from your living room

Had you organised a visit to a wildlife park or zoo during the summer? Well, with that in mind, let your young explorers go on a virtual adventure by downloading the Wildeverse app, which permits your kids to check out faraway places into your home. They will be able to discover virtual forests and jungles chock-full of all sorts of wildlife. Make the experience even more authentic by using pillows and blankets to create their very own explorers’ 4x4 truck.

Get crafty in the home

Whether it’s knitting, baking or painting, pottery or even playing with Lego - we’re sure you’ll want to get creative during COVID-19. Crafty fun can also be therapeutic and beneficial for your children’s mental health and can also help to form part of a home-schooling plan, there are plenty of fun games and activities for your little ones to enjoy, you just need to think outside of the box and there will be plenty for them to do.

Homemade time capsule using a cardboard box

Time to get super creative and perhaps think ‘inside’ the box for this one! Set your kids the challenge of creating a time capsule by recycling a spare cardboard box and filling it with trinkets and memories that they have. This capsule will definitely give you all something to laugh and smile about on their 18th birthday or whenever they wish to open it, the box should contain memories of the quality time you spent together when life was a bit unusual as it is right now.

Have lots of fun and most importantly - keep smiling

The key to having lots of fun during this unusual period is to do whatever allows you to make your little ones smile, whether that be crafts, camping, creating a time capsule or something else! There is plenty that you can do for little to no money which will keep them happy and entertained and most importantly - safe.
