The Benefits of Arts and Crafts for Children

Arts and crafts are a popular activity among children of all ages, but it’s not just fun, in fact, it can also help child development in a number of ways. By doing crafty activities in pre-school and at home, children can gain a lot while doing something fun and stimulating.
Read on for our top benefits of arts and crafts for children.
Fine motor skills
As children grow they begin to develop their fine motor skills which are the coordination of small muscles used in movements such as holding a pen, using scissors, stacking blocks, doing up buttons and stringing beads. Arts and crafts help to develop these skills as the majority of activities solely rely on hand movements. For younger children, why not set up some finger painting? Challenging their hand-eye coordination, this will help them lead up to holding a paintbrush. Weaving, sewing, stamping and using playdough also helps with hand strength.
Creativity and imagination
The great thing about art, is that there’s no right or wrong and children can be as creative as they please. Expression and imagination should never be limited, instead, children should be encouraged to share their interpretations, thoughts and artistic flair with others. The different textures, colours and shapes can make their thoughts come to life, whether that be a space scene made out of paint and glitter, a playdough model or bug made out of felt.
Achievement
Most people remember their parents hanging their works of art on the fridge or somewhere special for them to admire, creating a sense of achievement. Art and craft activities can encourage children to take pride in their work, whether it be an individual piece of art or a group piece. Art often requires trial and error, which colours do they have to mix to get the right one? How long will it take for the glue to dry? How many shapes do they need to cut? All of these things will help them develop patience, and at the end of their project, a real boost in their self-esteem and confidence.
