One of the most exciting milestones that your baby will experience is moving on to solid foods. Also known as weaning, as your child becomes less dependent on milk, you have the exciting challenge of introducing a whole new world of colours, flavours and textures to their palette. It’s normal to feel a little anxious about this change, but getting clued up on weaning will make the transition easier.

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions.

When should you begin weaning?

According to NHS advice, babies should receive their nutrients exclusively from milk until around six months of age. From six months onwards you can start to introduce your child to solid foods, which is known as weaning but you can continue breastfeeding for as long as you feel comfortable.

What are the signs that your baby is ready to be weaned?

It’s important to remember that all babies develop at different stages so not all children will be ready at the same time. However, common signs that your baby is ready to be weaned include:

●    Being able to hold their head in an upright position
●    Makes chewing motions
●    Is curious about what you’re eating
●    Has good coordination and can look at food, grab it and put it in their mouth

Which foods should you start with?

Did you know that it can take around 10 tries of a new food before your baby gets used to it? When you first start weaning you should make pureed or mashed foods such as soft fruit and vegetables, baby rice and baby cereal. Once your baby is used to this, you can continue with texture progression and gradually move on to lumpier foods little by little.
